Completed strength now going to learn ten level 2
" When my teacher was teaching me nen, he told me to never tell someone what type I was, but because you seem nice, I'll make an exception. I am a manipulator, I moved the leaf around when I focussed my aura on it " Mervyn explained, he didn't want to explain his powers yet, it still had many weaknesses, his idea was for the future to absorb a hit, get less damage, make the fight one of stamina while taking down the enemys stamina and increasing his own, to some it might be a power that wasn't fun, to others it be one that was really cool, Merv knew that some disliked his ideas but hey, this was a power or atleast this will be a power which increased his chances of survival.
The sailor stretched as he placed his hand on his knee, he then used his Ten to allow aura to flow out and keep the nodes open, he then decided to focus his aura in his arm while the rest of the aura was gently moving around his body. " So Shinzu, have you found out how to block against a nen attack?" the sailor asked, hoping he knew how to, if not he was going to offer to teach him, Nen was a beautifull but scary power, one attack could kill if one wasn't carefull and knowing how to use your nen defensivly was mandatory for surviving.

11. “A Manipulator?” The term wasn’t as vague as Transmuter. Like Enhancer, it was pretty self-explanatory. However, what exactly were the limitations of Mervyn’s power? Was the teen being subtly manipulated by the sailor at this very moment? For now, Shinzu dismissed his concerns and worries with a quick chug of his beer. Mervyn didn’t seem like an enemy. Still, for now he’d have to be cautious and treat the sailor as everyone else by hiding the full extent of his Nen abilities. “Nen, huh? I’m going to have to get used to not calling it psychic abilities.”
“Block a Nen attack? Yeah, just sidestep the attack.” Shinzu chuckled. Being a pacifist, he preferred dodging and fleeing compared to outright blocking. Still, witnessing the multi-coloured man’s attacks, Shinzu did have an idea back then of how to block his Nen. “Nen can only be block with Nen… Right?” The teen focused on his chest. Carefully, he released his flow of aura and coated his upper chest in a layer of aura. Immediately, under his shirt and away from Mervyn’s view, an elongated maw burst free from the aura.
Shinzu was used to using his Nen abilities offensively. However, the sailor had given him an idea. The sturdy teeth of his maw could easily be utilised as a shield or armour. However, noticing that the maw was causing movement under his shirt, Shinzu immediately dismissed it before anyone could notice anything strange. “It’s pretty difficult keeping all this Nen stuff hidden… Say, is there a way to be stealthier? Maybe even make your Nen abilities invisible?” A glimmer appeared in Shinzu’s eyes. He was desperate to ‘level up’ his abilities.

#2 Meryn nodded to Shinzus smart remark, " Indeed the only way to block nen is with nen, you will have to learn moving your nen around your body and focus it on the part where you need it the most, if you go for an all out attack with 0% of nen defending then you are way to risky, I generally try to stick to keeping around half my aura for defense" the sailor explained hoping that his drinking partner understood this too. " I think you have a feel for this Shinzu, you understand things quite fast, most people would have a hard time understanding it all"
The only way to see nen attacks is by using something called gyo, where you focus your aura on your eyes and that way you can see the aura forming around you otherwise only some attacks are visible. " There is ways to hide your aura, people often won't be able to sense you, though I haven't been able to do that yet, I am only a beginner of sorts my self " Merv explained scratching his head, Shinzu was really ready to get the hang of this, he was a talented and quick learner, with him on his side the two would make a good team for the hunter exam. Though he himself couldn't fall behind, he was planning to keep his aura control up mid conversation, quickly changing positions in his body where the aura output was higher than others.

12. “I see… Nen’s limited nature surely does mean using it both offensively and defensively at the same time should be difficult without sacrificing one or the other.” Shinzu stroked his chin. Nen was limited sure – but was there a way to output more to utilize stronger effects? Pondering over this, the teen focused on his body. A usual surge in energy accompanied a thin layer of aura surrounding his body. However, unlike before where he’d stop, this time he left his nodes open in order to continue outputting his aura.
It felt extremely draining. Seconds later, Shinzu’s aura grew thick and sickly. He was beginning to feel faint and dizzy. Before passing out, he shut off his aura output completely. It appeared that simply conjuring more Nen was not a simple matter. “Oh thank you…” Shinzu blushed slightly at the compliment. He wasn’t used to words of positivity being aimed at him. For a moment, he even had to think about it carefully to make sure Mervyn wasn’t being sarcastic. “Really? This Nen stuff seems simple enough. It’s just like a video game. Follow what the tutorial instructor says, and it’ll make everything a piece of cake.” Shinzu really wasn’t a creative thinker. However, following instructions to the exact letter, that was his forte. “Gyo… Sounds rough. You sure that is safe for your eyes? Have there been studies that show the long-term health risks of using this Gyo thingy? I worked hard at spending a entire childhood playing video games without ever needing glasses. I wouldn’t want this Nen stuff to be the reason I finally need to visit the opticians…"

#3. The comment his companion made, made Mervyn chuckle, though it kind of made sense, using something that could hurt others on your eyes did seem a little bit strange. " It is all safe, don't think your on nen can hurt your body, Maybe if you try really hard but there is no reason for that I guess" Mervyn said as he scratched his head, it could be kind of a good idea for using his power, he was wondering that after a touch damage inflicted to himself would also be hurting his opponent, that would be certainly helpfull abeit a little worrying to even think about. The man pondered as he took a sip of his drink, he really did need some booze tonight.
" So Shinzu, tell me something about yourself, if you don't mind I am just curious to the man sitting in the room with me, you know more about me than I about you " The sailor mentioned, playing around with his aura, he didn't want to lose out to Shinzu, this all seemed so easy to him while it was rather hard for Mervyn, he even was a manipulator, someone with the most control over aura. " Hey shinzu focus your aura on your eyes and look here, what do you see" Mervyn asked as he hold up a finger shooting aura out it forming a number with his Nen. This was something his own teacher used to do, and it really helped him to learn how to switch using gyo with defending or attacking.

13. “Hmm… If you’re sure.” Shinzu wasn’t convinced. Before he could trust that Gyo was harmless, he needed to see some studies or research papers on the subject. Still, Merv was right. There probably weren’t going to be any issues if it was used sparingly. “Something about myself…” Shinzu pondered as he called upon his aura once more. A strong transparent glow surrounded his palm on command. It appeared very reactive to his orders. The only issue was how much of a finite resource it was.
“As I already mentioned, I’m a gamer… I also love animals. I have a lost pet agency…” Shinzu scratched his nose with his Nen enhanced hand. Rather than a satisfying scratch, the aura seemed to massage the itch and make it worse. “I see… Your finger?” Shinzu focused Nen into his eyes as Merv instructed. However, rather than being focused around his eyeballs, the aura seemed to wrap around his entire face like a thin blindfold. Lacking precision, it didn’t seem to do anything significant.

#4. Mervyn tried to train the youngster in front of him as good as he could, he learned nen from a master and wasn't really fit to train someone himself, he wouldn't be able to use the brute force his master used on him if he made a mistake. If Mervyn wouldn't have seen a number within a few seconds hed probably get hit with a stick a few times, he wasn't a person who could do that himself. Mervyn scratched his head with his other hand, while forcing his remaining aura on his eyes while upholding the number in the air.
" It seems like you aren't forcing the aura on your eyes enough" Mervyn exclaimed as he saw how Shinzu had put aura all over his face, this might let him show faint bits of aura but a real gyo needed focus to work, if he wanted to see the number uphold by merv, all his aura should be focussed on his eyes. "Relax my man, just exhale and let it flow, take a deep breath and as you do shoot all the aura into your eyes. Try to keep your focus on this, it's hard at first but the only way to see this power" Mervyn exclaimed as he was wondering what Shinzu would do next.

14. “Shoot the aura into my eyes? That sounds like it’s either going to make my eyes pop… Or cause me to fire laser beams.” Shinzu sighed and allowed his aura to dissipate so that he had a blank canvas to start again. “But I think I get it…” Following Merv’s instructions, Shinzu exhaled sharply before inhaling slowly. Once his lungs were brimming with air, he exhaled slower than the inhale and repeated the motions over and over again until he was relaxed.
Carefully, he called upon his aura. It was like a well of warmth had birthed itself inside of his chest. Before it dissipated, he called upon it and focused it into his eyes in the shape of two massive tennis balls – one on either eye. Such a large amount of aura focused onto two small areas was probably a massive waste of energy. Sadly, more precise and meticulous movements were difficult. At this stage, he only knew how to work with large chunks of aura. “I-I can’t see colour. Everything is in black and white!”

#5. Merv smiled as he saw his pupil practicing the skills he was teaching him, there was a lot of excess aura spent and his aura moving skills still lacked quite a bit, but shinzu was getting the concept atleast and he was willing to try and listen even if it sounded weird. Smiling a little the captain clapped and then used his aura to create a letter on his finger, he pointed at it. and wondered what Shinzu was seeinig if he looked at it " Only black and white? that's kinda what you see indeed, look here! see this letter?" merv exlaimed with a lot of enthousiasm.
Honestly it was quite weird for the sailor to help others in their training, normally he wouldn't want people to do anything, he would want to shoulder all the problems himself so no one had to worry or do anything, though he knew that Shinzu was going to find out about aura anyway and if he had no teacher or a bad one things could go really bad, that's why he decided to help the man out. It kind of helped that Shinzu knew who he was and knew about his gaming achievements, which still kind of made him feel shy and proud at the same time.

15. “Letter…?” Shinzu gazed through the cloud of aura obstructing his vision. Somehow, it had removed his ability to perceive in colour. There seemed to be no real tangible benefits to this drawback either. No letter, no number, no nothing. “You sure you’re doing it properly?” He asked as he squinted his eyes to help himself focus even further. Despite the attempt, he still couldn’t see Merv’s aura.
Wondering if his aura was lacking, Shinzu awakened more of his supply of aura and pumped it into his current construct. The aura around Shinzu’s eyes immediately became thicker and cloudier. This only seemed to blur his vision and make it even more difficult to spot what Merv wanted him to see. Even worse so, the moment Shinzu focused even more, his aura turned completely pitch-black somehow, leaving him unable to see anything at all.

#6 When the sailor saw the mans aura turning pitchblack he realized it was too soon for this, he stretched and relaxed his aura. " Don't worry Shinzu, you might be overdoing it a little now, just relax and try again later " Mervyn exclaimed as he sat down and kicked back. " It's hard to learn this, just practice a lot and don't beat yourself up over not doing it in the first try, just know when to stop, and if you see black that might be the correct moment to stop " Mervyn exlaimed with a sigh.
Pouring in some of his whiskey he kicked back and put his feet on the table. " We've been practicing hard let's take a break" Mervyn said with a small smile, any excuse for some whiksey was a good one anyways. He wasn't sure what to think of the black aura, it was a bit weird but didn't want to put too much thought in it everyones different, and maybe it was because of his affinitys. Mervyn scratched his neck and practiced moving around his aura from the left to his right arm wwhile drinking whiskey, this was a training he used to do a lot.

16. Shinzu released his aura and began panting at Merv’s command. The strain was rough. Yet somehow, he felt stronger for doing it. It was like the act of exerting a muscle during exercise to make it stronger – only much quicker. “It’s not that I was seeing black… It’s just my aura does that sometimes… I think.” Shinzu raised a finger and began pumping out aura. A long transparent tendril formed.
Moments later, Shinzu focused on the tendril and in an instant, it turned black. Almost as if someone had spilled ink directly into a stream of clear water. Pitch-black, Shinzu began playing with the tendril by forcing it to curl, make loops and eventually, even a knot. He always had trouble controlling his aura but after all that stress, these precise movements seemed a lot easier.

#7. It was great seeing Shinzu this motivated, he was clearly exhausted but he wasn't giving up any time soon. Mervyn was focusing his nen on his eyes using his gyo to see Shinzu's aura. Just like he had said it was turning black, maybe it wasn't something bad but it was just some way for his aura to out itself, normally hatsu had to be trained but it was different to everyone, most people would think up something beneficial to themselves that would help their own ability and maybe unconsciously the man next to him had done that.
" Good job, you are certainly starting to understand this stuff" Mervyn exclaimed as he got up and stood in front of Shinzu, patting him on the shoulder thrice, " So, I want you to try your nen at me, you can block nen attacks by moving your aura to the place of impact to lower the damage dealt by the blow. this is something you need to learn if you want to survive in this world, blocking a strong nen attack without good defense will lead to dead" Mervyn exclaimed in a serious tone, a tone that didn't fit his usual clunky and cheerful self. He got in a combat pose waiting for Shinzu to strike him with his Hatsu.

17. Shinzu blinked. “It doesn’t feel like I’m getting anywhere…” He thought to himself. Sure, he had more control over his aura. However, he still couldn’t focus it into his eyes like Merv could. He was still lacking something. Hopefully, the next demonstration would reveal what. “Y-You sure it’s okay to attack?” Shinzu reeled back his fist and focused on summoning forth his dark aura.
Like shadows, the aura leaked out of the pores on his arms and surrounded his fist. Enhanced by his Nen, Shinzu pushed his fist forward and slammed it into Merv. Not being the violent type, let alone a pacifist that’d never engage in hand to hand combat, the punch was weak and likely, very predictable. That probably gave Merv plenty of time to react and defend against the strike.

#8. Mervyn nodded as Shinzu asked if it was okay to punch him, this was a way how he could help Shinzu from being overconfident with his new found power and meeting death for picking fights he can't win. The sailor took a deep breathe and relaxed focusing on shinzu who wasn't really into it, he seemed like a very passive person so a task like this might have startled him.
Observing Shinzu who was getting ready to punch, Mervyn noticed his form, the experienced brawler was pretty sure Shinzu had not seen a lot of fights before, though this could hopefully be a valuable lesson. Standing in front of Shinzu Mervyn decided to start with showing what a passive guard against nen was like. Sending equal amount of aura overall to his body he braced himself for impact. As the punch hit, it knocked the sailor right onto the couch, his legs pointed toward the ceiling. " Oof, that was me guarding with around 10% most of my aura is sent everywhere in the body " The sailor exclaimed as he got up infront of Shinzu again. " Now let's go again" Mervyn commanded as he sent most off his aura towards his arm where Shinzu had hit him before.
